Pianos :: Ludlow Street

Through the Lens of Pressley Abbott

Appearing refreshed and in good sprits, Gliss launched into the familiar reverb-drenched strains of "The Patrol." The sound is always good here, and the band seemed to pick up on that, playing a tight and taught version of the song.

A particularly snappy version of “Sad Eyes” was played, which is one of the poppier tunes on the new album.

With its infectious and hooky “ooh, ooh” vocal tag and quick duration (this version clocking in at under two and a half minutes), you have to consider the radio-friendly possibilities of this song.

“Morning Light” benefited from additional reverb on Reiss’ drum-kit tambourine shots. Credit the venue’s soundman for helping to sculpt the band’s sound in this positive way.

“Anybody Inside” had Victoria Cecilia stretching out on the bass this go round. Her long descending notes behind the title line created an additional counterpoint and sense of motion. Additionally, Martin Klingman was particularly animated in his guitar work here.  He came out to the front of the stage and started ripping off dark, reverberated chord progressions.

Klingman then jumped behind the drum kit, as Reiss came out and picked up the white Fender guitar.

The initial drowsy strains of “hello, hello” that signal “Love Songs” are merely the calm before a sonic sea storm. David Reiss is a whirling dervish of rapid-fire guitar strumming in this song’s center.

For their final song of the night, the band brought out “Blue Sky” again, from their first record.

It can’t be noted enough how good Martin’s drumming is on this. He’s displays an impressive syncopated press-roll to ride cymbal crash.

Gliss let’s no grass grow under their feet as they now head back down through the south and then to the southwest.  Following that, the band will head back through the Pacific Coast before embarking on another European tour.
