The track delves further into spoken word/post-punk territory while retaining the dark instrumentation and rawness of her sound. Written and produced by SOFIA ISELLA with additional production from Mr Hudson, the track dismantles the fetishization of youth and the way femininity is contorted into something to be consumed. Her bold study of power and perception erupts in a snarling mix of rage, cementing “Above the Neck” as one of her most formidable statements yet.
The single arrives in the wake of ISELLA’s North American You’ll Understand More, Dick tour and the announcement of select Florence + The Machine support dates including Madison Square Garden, Barclay Center and more. The headline run saw a frenzy of fans packed into rooms from New York to Los Angeles, matching the energy of ISELLA’s visceral and cathartic performances, with lines forming around the block well before doors. A classically trained violinist and poet, Isella draws from Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton and an artful rage that connects her to a matrilineage of righteous women who came before — PJ Harvey, Courtney Love, and the halcyon days of ’90s grrrl-punk.
