Little Dragon is on tour in support of their current release, Nabuma Rubberband, and the buzz band from Sweden played a tight show to a sold-out house at Oakland’s Fox Theatre on August 22nd. Opening for Little Dragon was Los Angeles based DJ, Dam Funk, who got the crowd nicely primed for what was to follow.

Based in Gothenberg, Sweden, the headliner employs Erik Boden (drums), Frerdick Kallgren (bass), Hakan Wirenstrand (keyboards) and Yukimi Nagano on vocals. Their music has elements of soul, R&B, pop, and electronica to name a few, but overall it’s difficult to categorize. With instrumentation consisting of two synthesizers and drums, their sonic palette is heavily rooted in the electronic realm, though Yumiki’s vocal style often leans to R&B and jazz. She has a remarkable range, and has no trouble soaring above the incredibly dense sound the band often delivers.

The well-paced show had the crowd jumping and dancing with joy throughout the night; clearly, Little Dragon has struck a chord with the Bay Area music scene and will likely always enjoy a loyal following here. One can only assume this kind of excitement and buzz is often repeated during their travels.

Currently on their fall tour, the band will be retuning for a second appearance again in October. Not surprisingly, it’s rumored to already be nearly sold-out, and after the performance they gave Friday night, no doubt, ticket demand will likely be on the increase.
