A Summer Send-Off
Spreading Jersey Pride with Quincy Mumford

Words by Audra Tracy

Bred on the salt air of the Jersey shore, Asbury Park-based act Quincy Mumford & The Reason Why know just what it takes to create a genuine summer soundtrack. And with their new LP, It’s Only Change, the budding jamband seems to have bottled that sun-kissed spirit for you to enjoy all year round.

Quincy and his crew spent this summer promoting the record with a series of shows around the great Garden State, and this Saturday they’ll wrap up the tour with a gig at the Algonquin Theatre in Manasquan. As we approach Labor Day weekend, the young Mumford gives us more than a few reasons why you can’t miss this show…

Congrats on the release of your new LP! What was it like recording in Nashville? How did that scene influence the overall vibe of the process? The sound of the record?

QM: Thank you! Nashville was amazing. The amount of talented musicians in that town is unbelievable. The studio we recorded in has been the same since 1970, and doesn’t need to change! We only had 10 days, so we recorded for about 12 to 13 hrs a day. After being in the studio for that long throughout the day, I really got sucked into the vibe of the room and after a while, it felt like 1970, back in the day in Nashville. We even recorded on tape! The over all vibe felt super organic.

Being a Jersey native, you play on the shore pretty often. Tell us about your favorite home-state show to date. What made it so memorable?

QM: Well, about a year and a half ago, we recorded a live album and DVD in our home town of Asbury Park. It was 3 sold out shows over the course of 2 days. It was in an amazing sounding venue called “The Saint”, one of my favorite venues ever! The shows were awesome and the live album came out great! Now that memory is with us forever…literally haha we have an album to prove it!

The ‘jamband scene’ is full of Phish-heads, Umphreaks, and moe.rons…what name would you coin Quincy Mumford fans?

QM: Hmmm… never really thought of it… I always say the fans are “the reason why” …so maybe that’s it!

Your show this weekend will be co-headlined by fellow Garden Staters DeSol. Can we anticipate some collaborations on stage?

QM: Yes! Absolutely, we have some pretty rad plans! But you have to come to the show to find out!

What other NJ bands do you hope to share the stage with someday?

QM: Hmm…not sure, we have played with a lot of NJ bands. I wouldn’t mind opening for Bruce though!

What would you suggest that fans wear to your show this weekend to get ‘in the spirit’? What should they drink?

QM: Comfortable shoes to dance, and drink good quality beer!
