Hosted by City Parks Foundation, this season of SummerStage in Central Park features free shows by New York-centric artists, including a performance by the Sun Ra Arkestra on Saturday night.

The show began with opening act Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty, followed by a screening of two short films (Martin Hawk’s “A Litany for Survival” and Adrien Merigeau’s “Genius Loci”) as part of Rooftop Films’ ‘Summer Series’. DJ Greg Caz spun records in between sets before the headliner took the spotlight.

At 97 years young, saxophonist and band leader Marshall Allen is still going strong – he guided the Sun Ra Arkestra through a mesmerizing set of ‘cosmic jazz’ fusion to the delight of the New York crowd.  Together the band channeled the spirit of Sun Ra, while celebrating the late artist’s massive musical legacy.
